Gioia

“Joy is the feeling of grinning inside.” - Melba Colgrove

...."My brothers, consider it a great joy when trials of many kinds come upon you....." (James 1:2)  JOY. Who doesn't want to experience JOY, but having JOY about trials?  Authors from all walks of life tell us that our response to trials should be bliss, delight, and pleasure. This sounds like an impossible task to fulfill, but with patience and practice,.......lots of patience and practice.... the JOY will be experienced. Still not convinced....neither am I which is why I am writing about the topic....with hopes of convincing myself of this timeless truth. I desire to believe in, and live the JOY no matter the circumstance for trials are inevitable.

Kahlil Gibran once stated that those who never look on sorrow will never see joy. This can be interpreted as sorrow and challenging events being the catalysts to a blissful existence. A trial is a God chosen opportunity for one to grow in character and wisdom. As one lives through pain and frustration, we should gladly accept the trial for one will reap the benefits. Dr. Karl Payne, a Christian apologist, explains that an effective way to demonstrate the reality of one's faith to skeptical friends is choosing to remain content in the face of adversity. By cheerfully accepting one's surrounding circumstances, a Christian lives out her or his faith. Bright happy eyes gazing on sorrow reflect a deeper feeling of joy in one's heart. This reflection brightens the hopes of others telling them that they too can survive sorrowful and painful trials.

JOY is a Fruit of the Spirit. A fruit is a transmission structure of life.  Fruits transport the life force....the food source for seeds to develop into a living organism.  JOY is also then a vehicle to transport and transmit the Holy Spirit's life force to others in our environment. I see JOY as a way for the Holy Spirit to flow through us.  By not being joyful, one blocks the flow....like Hoover dam blocks the flow of water. A Christian faith opens one's heart to many gifts from God, and JOY is one of those things which God freely gives. Accepting His JOY along with sorrow will only increase the many levels of blissfulness in one's life. This acceptance of joy gives a foundation for the patience and practice during striving times and so the flow of continues.

St. Philip Neri, who lived in Rome during the 16th century, was known as a humorist who overflowed with cheerfulness.  His was delighted about being a Child of God and celebrated daily.  St. Philip believed and preached that Christians need to cultivate a worthy joyful attitude for living the twists and turns of the road to heaven. He wrote that cheerfulness strengthens the heart, and makes us persevere, so a servant of God should always be in good spirits. One's face should be a billboard of JOY. If more people informed the world of their joy with smiling faces, then maybe it would be easier to be convinced of the JOY in the middle of strife.

May I continue to strive in my pain and sorrow with joy.
St. Francis De Sales, pray for my patience, perseverance.
St. Theresa the little Flower, pray for my flow of joy in small ways.
Blessed Mother Teresa, pray for love to reach my heart, so joy will manifest. Amen.

Grazioso

Gracefulness is a virtue of a peaceful soul. It is an art form of beautiful willingness while displaying an elegant manner. Some people are naturally gifted with grace, but it is a state of gentle acceptance which can be developed with patience and practice. Unexpectedly, divine grace may befall you during certain circumstances through God's mercy.  One must just be open to the flow of life's forces that make the world go 'round ....pushing you forward; pulling you back; or moving you around in circles.

Grazioso involves cheerfully working with the matter along your path with efficient spiritual energy and elegant expression despite the circumstances. Inner soulful transformations are calmly implemented.  Friction can slow transformations;  but as long as forces are kept unbalanced with love, hope, and joy, divine motion will continue with acceleration or with a change in direction. Openness initiates a positive change instead of a negative change which indicates a slowing of spiritual growth. Resistance is the inertia of problems and stagnation. Some people think that if they could only get to a point of balance, then they could move forward, but balanced forces do not move objects. As Sir Issac Newton discovered as he wrote his three Laws of Motion, unbalanced forces are required to initiate, maintain, or change motion. To obtain a state of gracefulness, one must react to life's actions with faith, courage, and discipline.  These positive reactions will propel you to higher states of grace bringing you closer to the finish line...........happiness and heaven.

Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness, mentions in his book, Transforming Grace, that God's grace is not given to make you feel better, but to glorify Him.  Bridges believes that good feelings may or may not come.  The real issue is whether or not you honor God by the way you respond to your circumstances.  If you apply what Newton found out about forces, then when forces in your circumstances have increased and the acceleration of your spiritual growth is held at a steady rate, the mass of your gracefulness will increase. If the rate of your spiritual growth decreases, then your ability to deal with struggles and challenges (forces) will decrease leaving your gracefulness stagnant.  Gracefulness is not magic. It is a level of virtue which is achieved through constant faithful trial and error. Waiting for calmer or easier (balanced) circumstances will leave you with high inertia.  Don't allow laziness or fear to grab a hold of your heart.  This type of resistance is hard to overcome once it is set in place.

When a good day comes along, praise God and be grateful for the blessing.  When a forceful day springs up, praise God for the challenge and respond with grace.  He will respond to your peaceful actions with His Divine mercy and grace. As Richard Carlson wrote in his book, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, the trick is to be grateful when your mood is high and graceful when it is low.  He claims that the happiest person on Earth isn't always happy.  They have their own share of struggles, disappointments, and heart-ache.  It's not about how low they may land, but its how these people relate to their surroundings and feelings. People who appear to always be happy relate to their feelings with openness and wisdom which they have gained through spiritual growth  and understanding.

May I always remember to be grateful for blessings and graceful as I patiently await mercy.
May our model of gracefulness, Our Lady of Grace, pray for my intentions of peacefulness and cheerfulness.
St. Raphael, pray for the physical, emotional & spiritual healing of my loved ones and all marriages.
St. Francis De Sales, pray for the wisdom and knowledge of all teachers.
St. Florian, pray for the safety & protection of all firefighters & emergency responders.

Tempeste

Every time a storm begins, I cringe.  My skin crawls and my heart leaps with each shattering boom and sky splintering streak of light.  The wind whips the roof's shingles and twirls the energy of my soul.  Where cold air meets warm air ......where low pressure becomes surrounded by high pressure......my mind's eye meets my heart's courage sending my spirit into a clatter through poor attempts of calmness while waiting for the storm to pass.  Artist and entrepreneur, Vivian Greene, is well-known for commenting once that life is not about waiting for the storm to pass.  It is about learning how to dance in the rain.  If all I had to do was deal with rain, then the dance would be easy.......I can handle a little two-step, but its the unexpected toe-touches mixed with fancy salsas which can trip me up and land me on my "posteriore".

Ms. Greene's comment only refers to storm and rain in single form.  How does one maintain composure if the storm and rain are reoccurring or never end?  How does one recover from the utter exhaustion and devastation of a storm or the beat down of a hard rain?  Communities can rebuild and regain their lively momentum through assistance from FEMA, the Red Cross, and CERT groups.  These groups are trained to help people recover some form of their previous lives and nourish their spiritual upheaval. When I have been hit by a devastating storm or continuous rain down, I reach out to someone who has an up close understanding of my circumstance or just has a sympathetic shoulder to rest upon.  Sometimes, I turn to my spouse while other times, it may be my parent.  God knows who I need the most, and He may send a dear friend or my guardian angel my direction just at the right time.

Colliding pressure systems of life are not easy to contend by oneself. ...... Who likes to dance by oneself?  Awkward!  It is a great comfort knowing a safety net of love surrounds me, and it has been a humble experience learning to allow others to help me weather a storm.  Rose Kennedy questioned why people shouldn't feel free to delight in the remains of their lives after weathering a storm if the behavior comes natural to birds. Birds don't sing to themselves. They are communicating to one another.....that they are safe; giving their location; and quite possibly singing the joy and thanksgiving of survival. If I could hold a tune as well as a bird, I would sing a song of thanksgiving for saving my family and I from the most recent tornado storm which hit the heartland.  I also am grateful for the Irish prayer....."O Lord, be between us and harm; and protect us from the harm of the world." My saving grace is the willingness of my loved ones to hold my hand during each pressure system on my life's path. Since I can't hold a tune like a cardinal, then I pray as a faithful dove.

St. Raphael, pray for my healthy survival of each storm.
St. Jude, pray for hopeless devastation of my life.
St. Theresa, pray for my simple soul.
St. Florian, pray for the safety of all firefighters and emergency responders.
